Land use intensification destabilizes stream microbial biodiversity and decreases metabolic efficiency

چکیده
Urbanization and agricultural intensification can transform landscapes. Changes in land-use lead to increases storm runoff nutrient loadings which impair the health function of stream ecosystems. Microorganisms are an integral component Due sensitivity microorganisms perturbations, changes hydrology water chemistry may alter microbial activity structure. These shifts community dynamics metabolism quality, potentially impacting higher trophic levels. Here we examine effects associated on sediment communities by studying West Run Watershed (WRW) a mixed-land-use system Virginia, USA. Streams were sampled throughout growing season at six sites within WRW spanning different levels land use intensification. The proportion impacted urban development was positively correlated with temporal variation composition (adj R2 = 0.65), suggesting destabilize communities. Moreover, streams developed watersheds had increased metabolic quotient (20–50% higher), this indicates that have greater respiration per unit biomass signifies reduced efficiency. Further, our results suggest both directly indirectly via biomass. Taken together highly elevated conductivity, metal ion concentration, pH impose stress resulting efficiency respiration.

Stream biodiversity: the ghost of land use past.
The influence of past land use on the present-day diversity of stream invertebrates and fish was investigated by comparing watersheds with different land-use history. Whole watershed land use in the 1950s was the best predictor of present-day diversity, whereas riparian land use and watershed land use in the 1990s were comparatively poor indicators. Our findings indicate that past land-use acti...
متن کاملLand use intensification alters ecosystem multifunctionality via loss of biodiversity and changes to functional composition
Global change, especially land-use intensification, affects human well-being by impacting the delivery of multiple ecosystem services (multifunctionality). However, whether biodiversity loss is a major component of global change effects on multifunctionality in real-world ecosystems, as in experimental ones, remains unclear. Therefore, we assessed biodiversity, functional composition and 14 eco...
متن کاملLand use changes in an afrotropical biodiversity hotspot affect stream alpha and beta diversity
Land use changes such as deforestation and agricultural expansion strongly affect stream biodiversity, with several studies demonstrating negative impacts on stream alpha diversity. Effects of forest conversion on stream beta diversity are much harder to predict, both because empirical studies are few and because competing theories suggest opposite responses. Moreover, almost no data exist for ...
متن کاملLand-use, Land-cover Changes and Biodiversity Loss
During Earth's history, species extinction has probably been caused by modifications of the physical environment after impacts such as meteorites or volcanic activity. On the contrary, the actual extinction of species is mainly a result of human activities, namely any form of land use that causes the conversion of vast areas to settlement, agriculture, and forestry, resulting in habitat destruc...
متن کاملMicrobial biodiversity of meadows under different modes of land use: catabolic and genetic fingerprinting
The main goal of the study was to find differences in the bacterial community structure resulting from different ways of meadow management in order to get the first insight into microbial biodiversity in meadow samples. The next generation sequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing) was accompanied with the community level physiological profiling (CLPP) method in order to acquire combined knowled...
